It follows up on and compares findings with earlier reports published by the GICHD and SIPRI examining AVM incidents in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Data in this report stem from field reports from states, mainly national mine action authorities/centres, as well as mine action and other humanitarian organisations, and from media reviews in Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Urdu and Ukrainian. This report presents and analyses AVM incident data from 2016. It follows up on and compares findings with earlier reports published by the GICHD and SIPRI examining AVM incidents in 2015.

However, the comprehensive analysis of how AVMs hamper the socioeconomic and sustainable development outlook of communities in the medium and long term has often been overlooked. In October 2014, the GICHD and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) published a study on the humanitarian and developmental impact of anti-vehicle mines (AVM). Over the four years between 2015 and 2018, the GICHD and SIPRI recorded 727 AVM incidents that caused 2,077 casualties—519 people were killed or injured on average every year. This figure is significantly higher than the average of 357 AVM casualties from 2011 to 2014.
